First Look: Ian Owens with Soul’d Out Quartet

November 17, 2012 By: Aaron Category: First Look, SG Artists, SG Music, Soul'd Out Quartet, Youtube

Thanks to Youtube user r52003, we have our first glimpse into the new lineup of Soul’d Out Quartet. The group recently hired Ian Owens, formerly of the Cumberland Quartet, The Imperials, and Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, as their new bass singer following original bass Matt Fouch’s move to Legacy Five. There is a full playlist here, but I will post just a few videos here that highlight Owens’ mark on the group’s sound. My two cents’ worth comes after the videos:

When Ian first joined EHSS, I anticipated a different sound from Tim Duncan, having heard his previous work, and I enjoyed hearing him develop over his time there. Perhaps that development is why he is showing so strongly right off the bat with Soul’d Out. Another factor may be because he is following a bass singer that shares a similar vocal style and is more free to make the role his own. With EHSS, this was a harder task, since Tim Duncan is of a different “bass singer mold,” and while Owens certainly did an admirable job in making the position his own with that group, the potential is greater here.

I noticed a change in tone for Owens as well, at times hearkening back to his Cumberland Quartet days. This is a testament to how his lower range filled out during his tenure with EHSS; songs like “Traveling Home” are a good example. This is not to say that he has lost the upper range that has become a trademark for him; the group uses a slightly different arrangement of the “Old Rugged Cross,” to showcase this, as he did with his previous quartet.
