Steve Ladd Leaves Gold City

April 27, 2009 By: Aaron Category: Gold City, SG Artists, SG Industry News, SG Music

Kyle Boreing has the scoop. After five years of singing with the Gold City quartet, tenor Steve Ladd has resigned.

Gold City has announced that Steve Ladd has resigned his position as tenor vocalist. Steve has been with the group for almost 5 years. He will be taking a job as worship leader in a church near Gadsden, AL.

“We hate to see him go, but wish him the best in this new endeavor” says Daniel Riley. “He spent a lot of time considering this move and I’m sure that he will be an asset to his church, just as he has been here. Steve is a dear friend and we will miss him.”

Steve says, “Being with Gold City has been a dream come true for me. This has been a very tough decision to make. These guys have become my dearest friends. I love them like family and that made my decision especially difficult. Gold City has always had a reputation for finding great talent and I expect that they will find an incredible tenor. I have always been, and will continue to be a fan of Gold City.”

Those interested in this position should send your resume, a good quality demo that shows your voice quality and range and a current photo to:

U.S. Mail
Gold City Att: Audition PO Box 2100 Gadsden, AL 35903

Fedex or UPS
Gold City Att:Audition 1820 Hwy 278 Gadsden, AL 35903

You may also email a resume, a good quality demo that shows your voice quality and range in MP3 format and a current photo to: tenorauditions@me.com.

Very sad to see this happen. It was quite a treat to hear and watch as Steve improved steadily over his course with GC. I wish him well in his latest endeavor, and I wish Gold City a good tenor search.

Marshall Hall’s Future Plans

April 23, 2009 By: Aaron Category: Gaither Vocal Band, Marshall Hall, SG Artists, SG Industry News, SG Music

After months of many people (including myself) wondering what the former GVB baritone would be doing, he posted an announcement at Gaither Community As some have said already, he has accepted a position as worship leader at a church in Arizona. However, he’s not done traveling and singing yet, as the church is allowing him to have a small solo career as well as take the aforementioned position.

Hall will be recording a project with Daywind Records over the next few months.

New SG Websites

April 22, 2009 By: Aaron Category: SG Artists, SG Industry News, SG Music, The Dixie Echoes

Singing News is having a test run of their new website layout here. They’ve been using this lineup on SouthernGospel.com for quite a while, so I figured it was a matter of time before the actual Singing News website got a similar look.

Also, the Dixie Echoes have unveiled a new website. It’s their first flash-based site, as opposed to the straight HTML they’ve used in the past (hat tip, DM).

Gaither Vocal Band Reunited Tour / Swain’s Musings 2nd Anniversary

April 20, 2009 By: Aaron Category: Bill Gaither, Blogging Community, Gaither Vocal Band, SG Artists, SG Industry News, SG Music, Special Announcements

According to a press release on Gaither.com, the new Gaither Vocal Band will be taking a solo tour starting in September, emphasizing the fact that three of the five were with the group once before. There are about four dates up at the moment, with more to follow.

I’m hoping the tour will be coming to VA so I can catch a GVB-only concert. The GVB hasn’t done anything as headliner group since probably before I was born, aside from an occasional video like Give It Away. It’s been mostly the Homecoming circuit for them, with a smattering of events with just one or two other groups. Count me among those who have been waiting for something like this for a good long while.

Now, on a totally different note, yesterday marked the two year anniversary of when I started this blog in 2007. It’s been quite a thrill watching the opportunities and readership that God has (and continues to) bless me with through this blog. Thank you all for reading!

Gaither To Release "Best Of The Crabb Family" Video

April 15, 2009 By: Aaron Category: Bill Gaither, Crabb Family, SG Artists, SG Industry News, SG Music

This new preview video popped up in my Youtube feed today, promoting the June 30 release of “The Best Of The Crabb Family.”

I suppose I did see this coming. Much like the Best Of The Cathedrals video that came out after they retired, Bill Gaither is making a video paying tribute to a group that made an impact on the Southern Gospel Music world. Granted, The Crabbs were not around nearly as long as The Cats were, but their influence on the music in the time they were together is undeniable. And like The Cats, their influence is continued today through groups like Crabb Revival, Mike & Kelly Bowling, Aaron & Amanda Crabb, etc, that “spun off” of them.

Needless to say, I think this group will stay a tad bit more inside the SG realm than did the Reunion they had at NQC this past year, especially since all of the clips shown in the promo video are Gaither video footage.

Crossroads Music Puts Up Previews Of New Releases

April 13, 2009 By: Aaron Category: Archie Watkins, Kingdom Heirs, SG Artists, SG Industry News, SG Music, The Crist Family

Crossroads Music has released previews of tracks from three upcoming releases: one from the Crist Family entitled Declaration, another from the Kingdom Heirs called When You Look At Me, and Archie Watkins’ debut solo album, Amazing Grace.

I’m especially looking forward to picking up a copy of the new KH one. Their last major release was in 2007, and this one will be a winner if it’s anything like True To The Call! The Crist Family’s new one sounds good as well, and considering that I’m not too familiar with their stuff, I may start by getting that project.

Happy Easter!

April 12, 2009 By: Aaron Category: Holiday Wishes

Isn’t it awesome to know we serve a Savior that arose from the grave on this day so many years ago? Hallelujah!

The song that’s been running through my head all day fits this day so well: “Celebrating Resurrection Morning” by Cross 4 Crowns. Listen to it and rejoice in the fact of Christ’s resurrection!

The New GVB: "I Believe In A Hill Called Mount Calvary"

April 08, 2009 By: Aaron Category: Bill Gaither, Gaither Vocal Band, SG Artists, SG Music

Hat tip goes to Kyle Boreing for this.

For all those who still think Michael English was a bad replacement for Guy Penrod, check out this recent clip of the group. English’s vocals these days are sounding as good as they did his first time around with the GVB. I think I may even prefer this new lineup’s version to the one with Guy!

Needless to say, this excites me all the more to hear it in person at the end of the month. And, if this is any indication of what we’ll hear on the next project from these guys, it’ll be a “home run” project!

Another video: Here’s another video of the same concert and location of the new group singing “It Is Finished.” Keith Waggoner (tenor for the Liberty Quartet) was there the night they did this and he said that David Phelp’s high note at the end of his verse was the highest he’d heard him go on this song. He estimated it was either a high E-flat or E. It’s fantastic either way.

From a Dove Brothers newsletter sent out today:

Early this morning we received a call that our piano player, Jerry Kelso’s son was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. Brandon Kelso, age 22 was riding on his motorcycle and a car pulled out in front of him. It was said that the road conditions were wet which may have lead to the accident. This happened in Kentucky where Brandon recently moved. He was born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina which is where the funeral services will be held.

Please keep Jerry and all of his family in your prayers at this time. The arrangements are pending at this time but we will update everyone as to what the funeral arrangements will be as soon as we hear.

You can send cards to:

I do not know what to say other than pray. I can hardly imagine losing a friend or brother so tragically and suddenly, and my heart goes out to Jerry and the rest of the Kelsos.
